New Zealand South Island Fo Guang Shan had a group of participates arriving at one of the many Go Guang Shan Member’s, Peter John Stuart’s home at 2pm 22nd January. The 74 Year old Peter has an elegant composure and is very thrifty and clean and is a pious Buddhist devotee. Peter was really delighted and grateful to Abbess, the Reverends and the members of South Island Fo Guang Shan for accepting the invitation to visit his home.
In Peter’s garden there were a variety of many different plants Peter has carefully planted. The garden had a lot of different sized Buddha statues placed near native New Zealand plants giving a unique contrast look to the garden.
Inside his house there were hundreds of antique books from all over the World. Peter started collecting books when he was young and now his house is like a small museum of antique books .From the collection. Peter showed to everyone the smallest antique book in New Zealand. When it was placed on the Abbess’s finger, it was even more evident that it was so tiny. Everyone there was amazed to see such a tiny old book.
Abbess praised Peter for his diligence and patience for cleaning and looking after his collection of antique books. Also Abbess had a joyful discussion with Peter regarding his garden. Peter announced that he will play the Buddha musical names CD to his garden plants so they will grow big and strong. Lastly with the people present on the day Abbess led everyone for a purification and chanted “ Heart Sutra”.Abbess presented Peter with a framed work of Grand Master Hsing Yun’s master piece calligraphy “Be fruitful in Four seasons” and The Star and Cloud book as presents.
