Memorial Service – In memory of late Nelson Mandela

Christchurch Catholic Society held a memorial service on 12th of December in memory of the late Nelson Mandela. Mayor of Christchurch Hon. Lianne Dalziel, MP Hon. Ruth Dyson and Hon. Kate Wilkinson, The High Commissioner for South Africa, HE Ntombizodwa Msuthukazi Lallie and former honorary consul Mr Gregory Fortuin were present at the memorial service. Venerable Jue Xi, BLIA South Island President See Shen Lee and several other BLIA members were invited by Inspector Rakesh Naidoo to pay respect to the late Nelson Mandela at the service.

Hon Lianne Dalziel, the Mayor of Christchurch gave a speech during the memorial service. She said that the late Nelson Mandela had always been an inspiration to his nation and in fact, to the whole world. MP Hon. Ruth Dyson said that although the late Nelson Mandela had to go through a lot of hardships including spending 27 years in jail, he did not bear grudges against his enemy. The world will remember him and his warm smile.

The High Commissioner for South Africa, HE Ntombizodwa Msuthukazi Lallie thanked the Christchurch people who came to the memorial service on behalf of the people of South Africa. She said that even though New Zealand is a small country but the people have been extremely caring towards South Africa and their people are blessed to have New Zealanders’ companionship.

Venerable Jue Xi, BLIA South Island President See Shen Lee and fellow BLIA members spoke to the high commissioner after the memorial service and said that the late Nelson Mandela and Venerable Master Hsing Yun have similar mindsets and spend their life promoting understanding, peace and forgiveness. Venerable also invited the high commissioner to participate in activities organised by FGS to strengthen the bond between people and religion.
