The 7th “Estuary Art Award” held at Uxbridge, Fo Guang Shan invited to the Ceremony
The 7th “Estuary Art Award” for 2013 was held at Uxbridge Howick Creative Centre on the evening of 14th March. Fo Guang Shan’s Venerable Juehao, Venerable Rulian, and 5 volunteers from Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery 1 were invited to the opening ceremony. Uxbridge manager Tony Morgan welcomed the guests and thanked Fo Guang Shan for their support.
The Estuary Art Awards is a competition supported by Howick local boards and hosted at Uxbridge. The main theme centres on raising awareness toward protecting the environment of the Howick Estuary. The contestants are allowed to freely express their creativity as long as it adheres to the centre theme. Competition judge Rob Garrett expressed this year’s entry’s qualities have all improved compared to the past, and hard efforts are shown through their individual styles. He also mentioned these works can create discussions and contemplations to show off the importance of nurturing the local eco-system. This year’s winning entry is Belinda Griffiths’s “The Turn of the Tide”. Her inspirations comes the news report in 2012 about the rescue of a boy who is trapped in the mud while the tide is rising. This showed mankind’s insignificance and the need for humility when compared to nature.
Pieces from the competition will be exhibited at Fo Guang Yuan Gallery 1 on 5th May.
