Members of Fo Guang Shan Invited to “District Awards Ceremony” by Manukau Police
On 3rd July, the “2015 Manukau Police District Awards Ceremony” was held at the Manukau Institute of Technology Hall. To this event representatives from Fo Guang Shan including Venerable Juehao, Venerable Miaoyu, sub-chapter advisor Jennifer Liang and 5 Fo Guang Youths. Attending members of the police included Grant Nicholls; Police Commissioner, Richard Chambers; Police Superintendent, John Tims; Police Superintendent, Andrew Bayly; MP for Hunua, other officers, award winners and special guests, in total 250 people in attendance. This ceremony included giving out awards for long term community service and acts of bravery, with certificates of merit and gold commemoration coins of polices officers with excellence. Over 20 officers were awarded with prizes, including many serving for 14 years, 21 years and 35 years or more for long term community services.
Superintendent John Tim thanked all attending audiences as well as local council’s co-operation with the police. It is through everyone’s efforts that the police continuously uplift their values, leading to a safer community.
The whole ceremony panned out in a simple, relaxed yet respectful atmosphere. One award receiver among 10 was a brave 12 year old girl, who not only stopped a 11 year old class mate being bullied, but also escorted him back to his home. Other award receivers included brave front line officers as well as a civilian that jumped in to save someone from drowning. They’ve all received applause of accolade.
During the close ceremony, Commissioner Nicholls praised all the officers for their enthusiasm, passion and bravery to sacrifice and serve society. He emphasised that police officers are also a member of the community, so through mutual respect, a harmonious society can be achieved.
