NZP Superintendent Gemmell Visited FGS Auckland Adopting Venerable Master's Teachings as Life Philosophy

01 / 04

On 29th November 2023, Superintendent Scott Gemmell specially arranged a visit to the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple in Auckland, accompanied by Senior Sergeant Anson LIN. The Abbess Manshin of FGS NZ, the Minister in Charge of FGS Auckland Venerable Rulian and the Temple team warmly welcomed the guests.

Superintendent Gemmell was promoted to the role of Director of Partnerships for Tāmaki Makaurau in April 2023. Since 2021, he has formed a deep connection with the Temple while serving as the Area Commander of the Counties Manukau East. Supt Gemmell has been greatly inspired by the teachings of the Founder of the FGS Buddhist Order, Venerable Master Hsing Yun. During this visit, Superintendent Gemmell shared three key insights he gained from reading the Venerable Master’s biography Handing Down the Light, which has become a part of his life philosophy.

Firstly, he was inspired by the Venerable Master's joy in giving from a young age, who taught that Joy is like perfume. When we spray it on others generously, we’re sure to catch a few drops ourselves. Secondly, from the book, he learned about the Venerable Master's compassionate approach to leadership. Despite being a Great Master, he always led by example and never commanded people in a demanding tone, suggesting If I were in your place, I might try another approach which may bring better results. Thirdly, the Venerable Master's generous nature deeply moved him. Despite his own hardships in childhood, the Venerable Master gave away new shoes made by his sister to two other young novices in need, continuing to wear his own worn pair.

The Abbess shared the parable of Three Animals Crossing the River with Supt Gemmell, highlighting that everyone achieves different levels of realization in life, thus leading to different outcomes. The Venerable Master teaches the importance of living life to its fullest, developing personal potential and creating a bright future.

The enriching conversation left a deep impression on Superintendent Gemmell, who expressed his intention to visit the Temple again to deepen his understanding and gain wisdom. On behalf of the Temple, the Abbess presented a blessing card of the Venerable Master to Supt Gemmell, wishing him to discover the warmth and light within his life.
