Senior Citizens in Search for the Pure Land in their Souls Visit FGS South Island New Zealand
Have you ever thought of finding a pure land in your mind, even when you are in the hustle and bustle of this world? On 22nd August, 21 senior citizens from Christchurch Merivale Combined Probus Club visited Fo Guang Shan (FGS) South Island New Zealand, after being recommended by a kind-hearted person.
Guided by Graig, the person in-charge of this tour, the group had the opportunity to look at the exterior architecture of the temple. Besides, they visited Sarah Deans’ exhibition, “Flower Portraits”; Dean Buchanan’s abstract Oil Paintings; the time corridor; the main shrine; the library and etc. They were amazed by the great painters’ artworks and some even stood still to appreciate the masterpieces for quite a while. Upon stepping into the main shrine, the visitors felt the inner peace after looking at the Buddha’s statue and they enjoyed the tranquil atmosphere.
During the visit, the senior citizens were actively involved in the Q & A session. When Craig explained about Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s philosophies, some observant visitors looked at the portrait of Venerable Master Hsing Yun and showed great interest in Buddha beads. After Craig’s explanation, they were amazed by how Buddha beads could be used for counting while chanting, which leads to improved concentration level while working.
Among all Merivale Combined Probus Club visitors, most of them have no religious background, where only two of them embrace Christianity. The group gave positive feedback on their visit to the temple. They indicated that they have learnt a lot from their visit and they have attained inner peace. The group will pay a visit to the temple again in the future to discover the true meaning of Buddhism.
