Participation of BLIA South Island Members in T-EARTH Tree Planting for Reforestation Project
On 11 June 2022, Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) South Island launched the third T-EARTH Tree-Planting for Reforestation Project. In the morning, BLIA South Island Vice President James Low and First Subchapter President Tiffany Su led 23 BLIA South Island members and volunteers to Halswell Quarry in Christchurch to participate in Christchurch City Council's reforestation activity.
The event leader, Nigel Morritt, explained the scope of work and the precautions to be taken to participating BLIA members and other members of the public. The main activity that day was planting of tree seedlings. The procedure was as described below:
Step 1 – planting seedling into the earth;
Step 2 – covering the planted seedling with a layer of protective thermal fleece;
Step 3 – covering with a cardboard box for warmth and wind protection;
Step 4 – open small holes through the cardboard box to allow sunshine to reach the seedling;
Step 5 – spreading over the completed work with some grass to enhance warmth.
Other than BLIA members and volunteers, many people from Christchurch also participated in the activity of that day, and everyone was happy to contribute his part for the protection of Nature. Under the collective effort of all, 500 trees were planted that day. Nigel, who has served in the local area for many years, said: "I am very happy to see so many BLIA members and the local people participate in the tree planting activity. The Christchurch City Council has developed the quarry into a recreational park 30 years ago, with walking tracks and picnic areas, and city gardens, and nearby areas are also booming with developments. As more and more areas are developed, forest restoration work is becoming more important. I hope that everyone will actively respond to similar activities in the future.”
