2014 Completion of Buddha’s Light Offering Dharma Function

01 / 05

The annual Completion of Buddha’s Light Offering Dharma Function 2014 was held on the 12th of January. The ceremony was presided by Venerable Abbess Manshin, where 120 devotees chanted Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva Universal Gate Chapter and Prayers and Wishes for Light Offering by Venerable Master Hsing Yun. Each line of the scripture was recited to invoke the protective powers of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.

The Abbess explained that the offering of lights signifies illumination, wisdom, motivation, mental agility and other positive qualities. This helps to clarify our thoughts, which will lead to true self-discovery and self-respect. Then a video footage from the 2013 Brilliance of China - People of the Year for the Dissemination of Chinese Culture award was shared with everyone. It showed Fo Guang Shan Founder Venerable Master Hsing Yun receiving an award for contribution to world peace and service for cultural exchange. The Venerable Master was the only member of the Sangha so far to receive such a prestigious award. For his whole life, the Venerable Master has been lighting the way for others by writing books. He always upheld the motto of “The Temple comes first, people come first, Buddhism comes first, and professional responsibility comes first”. During the award ceremony, the Venerable Master spoke: “Chinese culture was enriched because of Buddhism. Buddhism was in turn elevated because of Chinese culture. Chinese culture and Buddhism complement each other. If Chinese culture and Buddhism can both continue to contribute to society, it will be even more beneficial to our country.”

After viewing, everyone was deeply touched by Venerable Master’s contribution toward propagating Buddhism throughout his 88 years in this world. The Abbess encouraged everyone to cultivate attitudes of “Replace small self with concern for others, abide in emptiness, find joy from giving, and live diligently”. This will elevate the value of our lives.
