14th July – Safety workshop by the NZ Police Force.

Another exciting day for the ANZBYC, this is the 3rd day of the conference. There were a 3 hour workshop conducted by the NZ Police force. The topics of the workshop were as followed: Road Safety, Alcohol and Party Culture; and Keeping Ourselves Safe.
The participants will be divided into 3 groups with each group alternating between the 3 workshops.
Inspector Julia Lynch and Constable Steve Carey conducted the Road Safety workshop.
They address the issues and common problems like tailgate and bad driver, fatigue driving, used of the mobile phone while driving, drink drive and peer pressure.
The advice for the road users and drivers are as followed: be patience, control the emotion while driving; let other the driver over takes if it is needs to be. The only method to combat fatigue is to take a short nap (pull over to a safe location if required), and avoid alcohol before driving. The youth needs to think twice before they take a ride in an unknown car (could be stolen), or with an intoxicated driver.
Secondly, the workshop on “Keeping ourselves Safe” conducted by Senior Constable Adele.
She covered the 4 most reports made to the police: the robbery, physical abuse, sexual abuse and internet abuse.
The prevention on the robbery is the fancy attires and gadgets; and handbags left on the trolley and counter.
Senior Constable Adele mentions no one should be a victim of physical violence and sexual abuse. The youth should stand up for themselves with a strong voice. They should talk to someone whom they can trusted, or talk to the police. Lastly, there will be a team of professional in the police force deal with the victim.
Since the internet is one of the main media used by the youth, there is also a growing trend of the abuse and scams on the internet.

Last but not least, Senior Sergeant Mike Fulcher and Sergeant Matt Tinnery conducted the Alcohol and Party Culture workshop. The information and data used is based on the Australia and NZ environment.
The police officer address the short term and long term effect of alcohol on the human body.
The alcohol is also considered as a number 1 legal drug in NZ, as the money spends is as much as the drug.
During this session, the police officer also demonstrates the amount of a standard drink, and the alcohol contents on the drink, the negative outcome of posting invitation on facebook, to avoid peer pressure at a party.
Therefore, the youth will be responsible for the decision they made and have to face the consequence.
They should also learn to refuse.
