Elders Study Group
One 26 July, the discussion topic of the recent Bodhi Study Group was the ‘modern’ relationship between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law which has changed considerable over recent years. Traditionally the daughter-in-law would defer to their mother-in-law for advice and guidance but the young women of today often prefer to make their own decisions which can leave the mother-in-law feeling upset and concerned.
Through his teaching, Venerable Master Hsing Yun, offers his advice about this sometimes ‘delicate’ relationship. He says that sometimes it is the mother-in-law’s good fortune not to know everything that is going on in the life of the daughter-in-law and that she should practice forbearance by pretending not to notice when things happen that may upset them. By accepting their daughter-in-law unconditionally, keeping their own council and enabling them to learn from their own experience, they will not attract negative reactions and responses.
If mothers-in-law apply these philosophies with an open heart they won’t be moved by any circumstances and their relationship with their daughter-in-law will be calm, with no obstructions.
