01 / 10

The “Cashel Container Mall” was the first part of Christchurch's red zone that opened their doors in Cashel Mall which was devastated by the February 22 earthquake. Prime Minister John Key, who opened the mall with Christchurch mayor Bob Parker at 12.30pm on October 29, said it was great news for Cantabrians and retailers who were determined to get their businesses up and running. "This is an important step in re-opening the CBD red zone to residents and retailers alike, and gives more certainty to people as they look to the future of this great city,'' the Prime Minister said.

Fo Guang Shan (FGS) South Island Venerable Miaoyu together with Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) South Island West Subchapter president Susan Wu, vice-president Luping, Young Adult Division (YAD) president Hao-Tin Lin and members of the BLIA showed support by visiting the CBD at 3 pm that day. The venerable and BLIA members felt the joy and gratefulness of this re-opening that was crowded and filled with smiling faces from people all over showing great support. FGS South Island member Luping that has never set foot near the Christchurch CBD since the February earthquake said it was great to see the lively CBD and happy that it is gradually opening up again. BLIA members will surely give encouragement and support by visiting the city more frequently.
