It's a Funtastic Heart of a Child Day

01 / 18

The Young Adult Division (YAD) of the Buddha’s Light International (BLIA) South Island held a “Heart of a Child – Funtastic Day” event on October 9 with 20 children came for the two and a half hour event. It’s the third year they have held this event and it is always to learn the spirit of generosity, compassion, virtue and morality.

The YAD members have also invited a very important volunteer, Nathan Durkin which his height reaches over 190 cm from University of Canterbury as a guardian to all the young children. Besides that, BLIA director Kuifah, lay Dharma lecturer Rosa Chen, BLIA English Subchapter member, Carole O’Neill and a lot more helped out on the joyful day.

The event started with a brief icebreaking game and then a temple tour. YAD President Hao-Tin Lin, members Ichen and Jason were the tour guides around the Art Gallery, Time Tunnel and Buddha Hall.

The game began in the Story Room where a story about a “Wisdom Lamp” had been stolen from the queen and was broken into five pieces. The children had to complete challenges like language translations, crossing the river game, passing the ping-pong balls and find clues to collect the pieces of the lamp to find all five pieces of the lamp. The children were split into two groups, but eventually they would have to work together to complete their mission.

Finally, the members of the YAD lead a hand gesture performance to the song “Vow to Be.” Venerable Juexi also made time for the children and shared what have been learnt today through their experiences. She then gave each child a souvenir to bring back. Today’s event saw the Six Paramitas: discipline, concentration, generosity, tolerance, diligence and wisdom, fully shown among the children. Most important of all, everyone that joined in the event today had a great Funtastic Day!
