01 / 04

Christchurch’s Lincoln High School students and sisters Frankie and Briar Whaitiri with Rangiruru High School student Bront Sadlier came for a visit to Fo Guang Shan (FGS) South Island on the 27th of May for the Friday Dharma Function and understanding Buddhism. In that, Frankie, Briar and Bront chanted the “Diamond Sutra” together with other Buddhist devotees and also stayed in listening to Venerable Miaoyu in the teachings of the late Tripitaka Master Xuánzàng Sānzàng of the Tang Dynasty in one of his saying “When Buddha was here I perished, when Buddha left this world I was born, repentance will be practiced more than wrong doings, even not to be seen the golden colour of the Tathagata”. Venerable Miaoyu has then encouraged devotees to learn and practice more in “Buddhist Repentance Verses”. The venerable has also taken this chance to show and teach on one of a repentance verse where the high school students experienced the beauty of it.

Later on, the venerable, Buddhist Light International Association (BLIA) South Island English Sub-Chapter President Glenda Hope, BLIA member Lih-Son Ding and others greeted the high school students. The students have also explained that they were here at FGS South Island for an understanding of different religions which their schools had a subject for them annually. Because of the earthquake, a number of religious centres were damaged, and the school had cancelled the subject. But 3 of them still hoped to learn more about different religions and this made FGS South Island a chosen place. The venerable has invited them to visit FGS South Island more often and to the Fo Guang Yuan Christchurch Art Gallery and Water Drop Cafe. All three students appreciated the hospitality and have said to bring more friends if there is a chance.
