Elmswood Residents Learn YAD Hand Gestures

01 / 10

Over the past few years, BLIA North 1 Subchapter has maintained an important custom of paying visits to the residents of rest houses where on every occasion they find themselves warmly welcome. On 23rd May, Venerable Miaoyu together with over 20 BLIA members visited the Elmswood Retirement Village for the second time this year.

Visit organiser BLIA North 1 Subchapter President Mrs. Yang wishes that their visits would bring joyfulness to the retired seniors. Venerable Miaoyu praised the retirees for being the mentors for the youth of today and commended their magnificent contributions to society. The Venerable’s comments were warmly received with the applause of the seniors.

The five performances showcased by the BLIA members during the visit included a folk dance, Tai-chi and several health-promoting exercises. Eighty-eight year old Lilian shared her experiences of practicing Tai-chi and encouraged everyone to take up tai-chi for the sake of making themselves younger and fitter. YAD President Jason Liu and YAD members sang “Harmonise” and “Star and Cloud” along with their hand gesture performances. The seniors, several of whom were ninety-or-so years old, were so moved that they joined the YAD members in their performances.

Elmswood Retirement Village manager Gail Campbell thanked the BLIA members for their performances and the joyfulness that they had brought to the Village. A vivid couple of hours had passed by as the BLIA members chatted away with the residents and shared a wonderful time together.
