She was almost drowned in the school swimming pool but was saved by her teacher and learnt that a little kindness can change someone’s life. This motivated her to help others just as the teacher has helped her. This story of 17 year old Lauren from Rosehill Special School helped her clinched the first prize in the Acts of Kindness essay writing competition for the age group 15 to 18. In the age group 12-14 category, 14 year old Frankie came in first when his honesty and courage in helping his friend returned stolen goods to the supermarket has appealed to the judges.

The Acts of Kindness Essay Writing Competition prize giving ceremony was held in Fo Guang Shan (North Island) on 24 August. Abbess Manshin, 30 BLIA members , 13 Rosehill Special School teachers and students attended. During the ceremony, Lauren and Frankie shared their stories with the audience. BLIA (North Island) President Dolly Tsai extended her warm welcome to the students on behalf of the members. “Humanstic Buddhism has found its’ footing in the local community, including the schools”,she said. She encouraged the students to visit the temple often and fill their life to the fullest.

Abbess Manshin was invited to present the winners gift vouchers as an encouragement. She explained the importance of practicing the three acts of kindness in daily life and emphasised on the cultivation of right thoughts as the thoughts will transform into action and speech.

The day ended with morning tea and a temple tour hosted by BLIA (North Island) Vice President Linda.
