The Exchange between Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism in New Zealand
On 9 June, Fo Guang Shan (North Island) Venerable Abbess Manshin, Venerable Manwang, Fo Guang Shan (South Island) Venerable Juexi and two other north island members visited Venerable Ajahn Chah’s Theravada Thai Buddhist Temple in Wellington. They were hosted by Abbott Ajahn Tira and Michael Nyein, President of the Wellington Theravada Buddhist Association.
Abbott Ajahn Tira showed his guests around the temple which is located in a rainforest. He explained the history and development of the Temple as well as the progress of the propagation of Theravada Buddhism all over the world. Venerable Abbess Manshin presented him with copies of Master Hsing Yun’s books and expressed her gratitude for having this opportunity to exchange the teachings and cultures of Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism and hopes that the two traditions of Buddhism can continue to work hand in hand in propagating the Buddha’s teachings throughout the world.
