Confirming the Buddha’s Teaching Through Meditation ~ Saturday English Dharma Service
On 3 April, Venerable Miao Yu led 7 members of the Saturday English Dharma Service to practice motive meditation across the Field of Merit, followed by sitting meditation. Although some of the members enjoyed peacefulness and serenity during meditation, they were unable to specifically explain how meditation can lead to happiness. Venerable Miao Yu explained that meditation and Buddhist teachings have to complement each other in order to obtain the best result. Through the Buddha’s teachings, we understand that all sufferings arise from our desires, attachments and ignorance. During meditation, when our mind is very quiet and still, we are aware of the tiniest thought that arises, including our desires and attachments. Only with the guidance of the Buddha’s teachings are we are able to have a better understanding of these thoughts. Before the lesson ended, Venerable Miao Yu hoped that everyone would try to practice meditation without any expectation in order to yield the best result.
