Outdoor Study Group on “Being the Best One Can Be”
Making the most of the wondrous scenery of spring, on 11th October, BLIA South Island organised an outdoor study group at Ilam Gardens. Those who grasped the opportunity to admire the heaven like floral scene of spring time while gaining wisdom from the Dharma included BLIA South Island Vice-president Mei-Hua Chen, North-one Sub-chapter President Gui-Hua Yang, lay Dharma lecturer Pu-Chang Chen and BLIA committee members, totaling 30 people.
Along the scenic Camellia walkway of Ilam Gardens, Venerable Miaoyu led the participants in a session of “Fo Guang Exercises” and Hui Ying hosted a few rounds of fun games. In the shade of an all encompassing hundred year old giant tree, the study group members read the text from “Humanistic Issues -Being the Best One Can” by Venerable Master Hsing Yun. The content of the text was divided into eight main points, which collectively taught readers the way of handling matters and conducting oneself.
Venerable Miaoyu explained that the merit gained from cultivation for each individual is different, and that everyone should play their role society as best they can; not be overly opinionated; fulfill the requirements of the Temple; and always be willing to be taught. One should begin by improving and making progress externally, continue by improving the inner-self, and work diligently with resolve, as in doing so, one may mentally and spiritually have room for improvement.
Venerable Miaoyu also encouraged everyone to return to the Temple more regularly and get involved with the undertaking of Buddhism and reminded all that even though we have made different vows, we are walking the same practitioners’ path. Lay Dharma lecturer Pu-Chang Chen also shared her personal insights into the Bodhi mind and practicing the Way.
To sum up, Venerable Miaoyu shared several anecdotes to emphasise the importance of living a simple, pure and undefiled life, and the value of doing good deeds and being a pious Buddhist, explaining that one who lives such a life may gain wisdom and merits; and that laughter can also alleviate worries and mind afflictions. The memorable study group concluded with everyone enjoying snacks and singing Fo Guang songs while basking in the glorious sun.
