01 / 05

The Open Ceremony of Howick Uxbridge art centre’s renovated facility “Malcolm Smith Gallery” was held on 11th June. The theme of the day is “Soft Architecture”. The new facility defies tradition by being presented in a modern, bright and transparent fashion. The event’s spacious and relaxing atmosphere was marked by natural light shining through the windows and accompaniment of soothing jazz playing in the background. Special guests invited to the event included Auckland Mayor Len Brown, local Botany MP Jami-lee Ross, Howick Local Board Deputy Chairperson Adele J White, representatives from local art galleries, local artists, Venerable Abbess Manshin, Venerable Rulian, Venerable Youcheng, BLIA North Island Advisor Liang Cheng Yi, Director Annie Ng and 7 other BLIA members.

The opening address was made by Project Deputy Chairperson Cliff Halsey to welcome the entire honoured guest to witness this brand new return of the facility. This was followed by a speech from Curator Balamohan Shingade to describe the general atmosphere of the Howick district. He also thanked the support from local council, the art community and the public for making this venue possible, where it offers a platform for cultural and art events to shine as well as increase awareness and appreciation for art from the local community. This centre have also received nationwide appraisal. Furthermore he explained that the concept of “Soft Architecture” is a combination of consideration for people, architectural qualities and aesthetics. This approach defies traditional approach where artists seek to bring out innovation by going against logical thinking. This received great applause from the audiences.
