Christchurch Seniors Know What it Takes

01 / 10

Yao Hong Ying’s painstakingly created Embroidery has touched the hearts of the Christchurch community and has also drawn art lovers in Christchurch to the Fo Guang Shan South Island’s Art Gallery. On 12th June, Ms. Nan O’Dowd brought over 20 members of University of 3rd Age (U3A) to the Exhibition for a visit. U3A was established in 1968 in France with the aim of providing a platform for senior citizens to further their studies. Their monthly activities include travelling or visiting art galleries.

After their morning tea at the Tea House, the group was welcomed by Assistant Art Gallery Curator See Shen Lee. Everyone listened intently during the tour and did not hesitate to ask questions about the Embroidery, as they appreciated works that have been created through years, in fact, a lifetime of diligence and sacrifice.
Ms. O’ Dowd and fellow tour members spoke highly of the tour of the Exhibition. They also expressed their appreciation for being given the chance to witness the assimilation of the oriental and western cultures’ in embroidery.

At the same time, they also expressed their interest in the design of the Temple building and intended to investigate further into the concepts behind the building. The visitors suggested that they will recommend their president to continue keeping in touch with the Temple and up to date with its upcoming events, as it is their wish to fulfil their desire for learning.
