West One Chapter Learns To Bake
On 17th May, a baking class was organised by West One Chapter of BLIA South Island. This class was led by Vice-President of West One Chapter Mrs. Lin who is a very experienced baker and she taught the members of the class how to make a variety of biscuits including walnut, peanut and almond. Over 20 people attended this class including BLIA South Island committee members.
To start off the class, Mrs. Lin provided some samples of biscuits, which she had prepared earlier, for the class to taste. This gave the class an idea of what kinds of textures are produced by different ingredients and what to expect from their own final products. She also introduced the various ingredients needed to make the biscuits including vegetable oil, sugar, milk, flour, milk powder, almond, walnut and peanut.
Mrs. Lin demonstrated in front of the crowd how to go about making the biscuits. First of all, the sugar and vegetable oil must be thoroughly mixed and then milk added in little portions at a time. After adding flour and milk powder to the mixture, the completion of the batter is brought about by the addition of almond, peanut or walnut.
The batter is then divided and shaped into many cylinders and subsequently placed in the oven. After a fair amount of time in the oven, the biscuits will transform to a white creamy colour and that is the indication that they can be cut into slices to form delicious biscuits. People who attended this class felt that through the teachings of Mrs. Lin, they have learned more about baking and gained more experience. Many also hoped that Mrs. Lin will be able to teach them more styles of baking in the future so that they can share what they have learned with family and friends.
