“Commissioner Ethnic Focus Forum” Held at Fo Guang Shan
The “Commissioner Ethnic Focus Forum” was held at Fo Guang Shan on 12th December. It was attended by Wellington Police Superintendent Wallace Haumaha, Inspector Rakesh Naidoo and representatives from the Indian, Asian, Maori and Pacific ethnic and social groups. Venerable Abbess Manshin was especially invited to offer blessings and words of prayer.
During the Forum on behalf of Superintendent Mike Bush, Superintendent Haumaha established a “New Zealand Multicultural Consultant Panel”. This Panel seeks to gather leaders representing all ethnic groups to assist and help Police’s central command to come up with plans and strategies. This is in order to reduce crime from multi-ethnic population. This panel plans to hold 3 important meetings per year.
On 18th December, Inspector Rakesh especially sent a letter to thank the temple for hosting the “Commissioner Ethnic Focus Forum”. This great contribution allowed further co-operation between the police and multi-ethnic groups of the community. The letter also talked about tragic terrorist event occurred in Sydney on 15th December. He confirmed that NZ Police will take special care toward the local Muslim community during these trying times to ensure their support and comfort. At the same time,
Rakesh also shared that the Race Relations Commission and Council of Muslims both announced “Our hearts are with citizens of Sydney” on 16th December. Chairperson of the Muslim Council Dr Anwar Ghani expressed that: “New Zealand Muslims expresses their sympathies and mourning to victims of the recent event. They will prayer for the wellbeing of the deceased as well as urging for peace.” He pointed out that New Zealand Muslims will work close with the police with mutual trust. He also hopes that this will strengthen the power of the various department and ensure more peace and harmony to a multicultural society.
