A Valuable Lesson in Pruning Plants
During the evening of 19th of December, Buddha’s Light International Association Young Adults Division members of North and South Island helped to trim the trees and bamboos at the East Wing of Fo Guang Shan North Island Temple, under the guidance of Venerable Abbess Manshin and Venerable Rulian.
At first, no one had the technique or experience of trimming the plants, but under the patient and careful supervision of Venerable Abbess Manshin and Venerable Rulian, everyone learned the correct and productive way to trim trees. The aim of the activity was to perfect the environment and scenery beneath the East Wing of the Temple. Two members of the youth were deeply immersed in the task at hand- as they manoeuvred around the tree to trim, they were scratched by branches, and their selflessness was displayed by their determination to complete the task amidst the constant scratching of skin.
Although the job of trimming is hard work, the youths learned valuable techniques and had a memorable experience. For example, when trimming bamboos, Nandina and Camellia, the excess leaves and branches should be cut so it is clean and unseen to visitors of the Temple.
This valuable learning experience has allowed the youths to become experienced gardeners, despite their initial cluelessness of how to trim the plants. The youths found the task to be a form of fun, as it allowed them to be themselves. Apart from the fun, the youth also had the opportunity for contemplation, where they didn’t have to think about their negative thoughts. This is what life is like for Buddhist youths– no complaints or unconstructive opinions- just a heart to do good deeds.
