Learning with an Eager Heart

01 / 13

On 19th March, Children Dharma Class commenced with students chanting in the Main Shrine. Beginner class began by playing a board game of ‘Dear Buddha, where are you?’. There were two types of task cards in the game, explained Carter patiently, as he stated the rules of the game. The children threw the dice and picked out either a question and answer or phrase acting task card. Jayden and Liam were able to read out the questions and gave answers correctly. Whilst Carter assisted Megan, Raymond and Celine, with the reading and explanation of the tasks. An example of the acting task card which the children enjoyed was, taking 10 deep breaths. Under the guidance of Teacher Chau, this fun and enjoyable activity was a success. Children were able to learn the knowledge of Buddhism whilst having fun. They actively participated in the exercises and answered questions as the class filled with laughter and joy.

At the same time, Intermediate class led by Teacher SinJun and Anthan learnt about Venerable Master Hsing Yun and his achievements throughout his lifetime. Students read through two short stories: Don’t Be Calculative, Don’t Compare and Ask for Intelligence and Pray for Wisdom. While teachers prompted students to engage in discussions around what they have learnt regarding Venerable Master and his experiences at a young age in the temple. They were surprised to hear that Venerable Master Hsing Yun became a monk at the young age of 12. Wish added that this was a great vow and that the Master had achieved and given a lot in his life. John shared that establishing the 3G4G was one of the important things he had done in his lifetime. This was followed by a worksheet to reinforce their learnings. The discussions were interesting and packed with information about the Founder of Fo Guang Shan. It was great to see the students contributing to the discussions and answering questions from the teachers.

Meanwhile, the Advanced class had a lesson on Causes, Conditions and Effects. Teacher Thomas used daily examples to ponder the student to know about its relationship. If watermelon seeds are the cause, then what are the conditions? Zoey, Skylar and Raymond mentioned conditions like sunlight, nutrients, water, and farmers. Teacher Thomas then explained that the effects will be the watermelon, which will again turn into seeds, thus, forming a cycle. The class came to a conclusion that it is important to do good deeds(causes) in our lives so that we will be surrounded by good people(effects) and guiding us to the journey of Buddhahood.

After activity one, students met in the Dining Hall for morning tea, and the class concluded with the learning of ‘Stars and Clouds’ hand gestures at Xiang Yun Hall.
