FGY Christchurch Propagating Buddhism via Art, Cantabrians Meeting One Another Through Exhibition

The Magnificence of Embroidery Exhibition at Fo Guang Yuan (FGY) Art Gallery is popular in Christchurch, attracting visitors from all walks of life, and it has also caused the development of good affinities between the Gallery and the public. From May to July 2021, the Exhibition has been visited by 5,000 people, including 46 visiting groups, made up of nursing-home groups, walking groups, and embroidery lover groups, as well as the MG Car Club, the Japanese Kimono Club, and staff of New Zealand Airlines, etc. Due to the tremendous response, there will be a group of visitors almost every 15 minutes. To cater to the large number of visitors, the Gallery has to extend its opening hours. Elderly people came to visit the exhibition regardless of whether they are facing rainy or severe winter conditions. People with limited mobility came in walking wheels or wheelchairs, and filial children took their own chairs with them to accompany their mothers touring the Exhibition.

The elderly visitors were full of praises for the embroidery works on display. They could not believe that so many excellent embroidery works have come from the hands of Yao Hong-Ying, who is already more than 50 years old, and they used the exclamations like “Exquisite", “Marvellous", "Stunning", "Spectacular", and "Magnificent" to describe their feelings. Some elderly embroidery enthusiasts quietly showed their own embroidery works to the Gallery staff, and self-mockingly said that they would try to reach Yao Hong Ying's level of excellence, something which is impossible!

Visitors with diversified inclinations brought with them rich varied artistic cultures, infinite surprises and lots of heart-touching emotions. Venerable Master Hsing Yun uses art to promote Buddhism and to establish a platform for Buddhism to communicate with the people. Master also uses art for his disciples to practice the teachings of Buddha. Through the art exhibitions, FGY Art Gallery Christchurch implements the concept of utilising Human Buddhism to beautify life, to enhance personality, and to serve Society.
