Three Generations Appreciate Embroidery Exhibition at Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery Christchurch
Christchurch resident William John Mitchelle was invited by a friend to Fo Guang Yuan FGY Art Gallery Christchurch to view the "Magnificence in Embroidery” exhibition by Yao Hong Ying, and was so amazed by Yao's high level of embroidery that he said he had to bring his wife to the exhibition. On 6 June, William brought his wife, two daughters, son-in-law and three grandchildren, a family of eight, to the exhibition, and they were warmly welcomed by staff member.
FGY Staff introduced the long history and characteristics of Suzhou embroidery to the visitors, telling them about the artist Yao Hong Ying’s level of dedication and focus need to create the embroidery. It was amazing to learn that each piece is made in many layers and at a high thread count density. Each piece is made day and night, an extraordinary culmination of years of work. FGY Staff told William's family that this is an example of how hard work will bring good results.
Afterwards, the guests also visited the Infatuation Painting exhibition and the main shrine. They were impressed by the solemn atmosphere in the main shrine and were very interested in the decoration of the temple. Whist there, they were happy to do some sutra transcriptions too. William appreciated the beautiful and quiet environment of the temple and the warm welcome from the staff, and said he would definitely come back again and enjoy a vegetarian meal at the Water Drop Teahouse.
