Canterbury Groups Visit Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery Christchurch

01 / 06

In the past few weeks, many groups have been visiting the Magnificence of Embroidery Exhibition by Yao Hong Ying at Fo Guang Yuan (FGY) Art Gallery Christchurch. Eight members of the Halswell Craft Group and 10 members of the Hōhepa Centre in Canterbury came to see the exhibition on 1st June and were welcomed by FGY staff on their arrival.

The Halswell Craft group was led by senior Jan Spence. They are all art lovers focusing mainly on handicrafts such as knitwork. When they saw Artist’s colourful and delicate work, they exclaimed, "Now this is art!” The elders were amazed at the scale and vividness of the embroideries that Yao Hong Ying produced using her skilful hands and heart. They sighed at the thought of how many years it would take for them to reach such a level and apart from envy, they could only admire the work.

Members of the Canterbury Hōhepa Centre have visited the temple many times under the guidance of some caregivers. Under the care of two caregivers, they were delighted to see the embroidery exhibition and became impressed by the beauty of the embroidery work that gave them a sense of inner peace. Afterwards, they also visited the main shrine and were impressed by the solemn atmosphere, feeling the peace and joy of the Buddha when they saw the statue.
