BLIA South Island Fostering Unity and Friendship via Basketball Game
After the successful launch of Futsal, Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) South Island Sports Club added another new game to their list of activities. Since the month of July, Futsal has ignited BLIA members’ joy and enthusiasm in taking part in physical exercises. Through the Futsal games, members have managed to foster closer ties among themselves and between parents and children, while experiencing the benefit of improved health. On 5th October 2018, BLIA South Island members again gathered at Bishopdale YMCA Indoor Stadium, this time, to have their first game of basketball.
On that night, 14 participants made up of BLIA and YAD (Young Adults Division) members, led by BLIA South Island Vice Presidents Lihson Ding and James Low, took part in the basketball game. BLIA member Jason Liu volunteered as the coach, guiding the players on the proper way to warm up, and showing them how to pass the ball among teammates and how to carry and jump-shoot the ball. Some players with knowledge of basketball game also chipped in to teach the beginners on the techniques involved in defending and attacking. Coach Jason then divided the players into 2 opposing teams to allow them to experience first hand the rules and regulations of the game. To make the game more interesting and challenging, BLIA members imposed the rule that shooting of the ball should be carried out after not more than 3 passes of the ball within the same team.
In the hour long session of practice and competition, members not only enjoyed the basketball game but also experienced the importance of teamwork. They fully participated in the passing of the ball and treasured every shooting opportunity. BLIA South Island Sports Club planned to continue with organising of similar outdoor activity next week, and hoped that the desired ‘esprit de corps’ spirit could be fully realised.
