BLIA New Zealand’s Exciting Outdoor Activities
From the 17th to 18th of March, Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) North and South Island New Zealand organised a joint annual general meeting. Besides about 30 local members, there was also a special guest from Taiwan – Fo Guang Shan (FGS) Headquarter Deputy Abbot Venerable Hui Zhao. After the meeting’s opening ceremony finished on the 17th, many gathered to listen to Venerable Hui Zhao’s talk on "The importance of causes and Conditions in this World", not only people who were at the meeting, but also others that were in Christchurch, with about 120 people listen to the Buddhist talk.
In the afternoon, more than 30 North and South Island BLIA members under the guidance of BLIA South Island NZ President Bernie embarked on a wonderful outdoor journey to visit the Christchurch Adventure Park. Walking through the dense native forest whilst experiencing the fresh air, everyone felt much more awakened and reinvigorated with the adrenaline zip line activity.
After two and a half hours of outdoor activity, all the BLIA member returned to the temple to enjoy dinner. The dinner was followed by an enlightening speech by FGS New Zealand Venerable Abbess Manshin. Deputy Abbott Venerable Hui Zhao then proceeded to lead everyone facing to the courtyard to provide light offerings to the Buddha. As the devotees lit the candle lights one by one, they recited the Buddha’s name, just as the great compassionate Buddha looked back at them. Venerable Hui Zhao recited in front of the Buddha, and on behalf of everyone, wished that every BLIA member and their family be happy, that the society and country remains harmonious, just as the atmosphere in the shrine is in a calm and peaceful state.
The second day’s activity started at 8 in the morning, this time with Arthur’s Pass National Park as the destination. Along the journey, the group did not forget to do their morning chanting service. The magnificent scenery en route showed nature’s brilliant craftsmanship, with herds of cattle and sheep dotted on the green grass, lakes against a snowy mountain backdrop, layer by layer presenting itself as a work of art. The beautiful autumn scenery of the South Island is something to behold, and in this mountainous zone, the BLIA members not only took to the physical challenge of climbing the steep heights, but also the mental challenge of exceeding one’s limits, with no less of a better waterfall view on top waiting.
After several hours of outdoor activity, the BLIA members began the journey home, satisfied with the day’s adventure. On the way home, Abbess Manshin chose the soundtrack, with a song called “Faith”. This song’s lyrics was written by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, and its notes sing out BLIA member’s strong belief and enthusiasm for their faith. With that, the day’s outdoor activity finished on a wonderful note.
