FGS Auckland Sharing Laba Congee to Celebrate Buddha’s Enlightenment Day
To celebrate the Buddha’s Enlightenment Day, Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple Auckland held the Laba Congee Sharing Event on 9th & 10th December 2023. Over 2 days, 2500 bowls of Laba Congee were shared with visitors from all walks of life, to celebrate the joy of Buddha’s enlightenment.
The Shrine Manager Venerable Miaoyu, led the team to cook the congee from early morning to 6 am. Deputy President of Subchapter 4, Eric Chang shared that mixing various ingredients to make delicious Laba Congee requires patience and careful attention. He also highlighted that Abbess Manshin often encourages BLIA members to serve wholeheartedly with a joyful heart.
The Cloud Corner was set up with calm music, elegant decorations and a beautiful flower arrangement. The nice fragrance of the congee received visitors to the venue. The Minister in Charge of FGS Auckland Venerable Rulian led the youth members in serving, packing, and even explaining the story of Laba Congee to the visitors. The corner was filled with a vibrant and joyful atmosphere.
The Advisor of the BLIA North Island Chapter Lintao YU expressed gratitude to the Temple for providing convenience to celebrate the Buddha’s Enlightenment Day earlier allowing more visitors to enjoy the Laba Congee. He blessed the visitors to gain wisdom and live at ease. Subchapter 3 President Anita Chu reminisced about the wise guidance of the Founder Venerable Master Hsing Yun, noting that the Buddha’s Enlightenment Day has become a cultural festival. Many locals would inquire about the Laba Congee at the Main Shrine even before December. This year, the event saw waves of visitors at the Cloud Corner, creating a warm and festive atmosphere.
Teachers Angela and Zhang Hui from the Chinese School brought students to enjoy the Laba Congee and shared its origin story, expressing appreciation for the Temple's efforts in preserving Chinese culture and creating beautiful memories for children. A mother who brought her child to the Children's Dharma Class remarked that although her child had just had breakfast, they still enjoyed a bowl of blessed Laba Congee, finding it delicious and unlike anything they had at home.
Abbess complemented the collective efforts and encouraged BLIA members to cherish opportunities to serve the community and gain wisdom through serving.
