BLIA YAD Auckland Reading on the Middle Path
On 3rd December 2023, the BLIA YAD Auckland hosted a reading session on the article Middle Path from the Buddha-Dharma: Pure and Simple by the Founder of FGS Buddhist Order, Venerable Master Hsing Yun. The committee Edwin Teoh led the discussion and enhanced the understanding of the members.
Venerable Master explained that the Middle Path is a way towards liberation that harmonises phenomenon and principle, as well as existence and emptiness, through the application of prajna wisdom. For example, the Buddha once guided his disciples Sronakotivimsa to adjust his method of cultivation, indicating that neither extreme fervour nor laziness is the right path. The Grand Master further explained living in the Middle Path, one will refrain from extreme views and ceasing dualistic thinking which allows the world to be peaceful and free of conflict.
Committee Alan Han expressed his gratitude for the Master's wisdom, which enlightened his mind. He realised that emptiness is not about the absence of everything but about changeability, form arises from conditions and is also subject to change. Applying the wisdom of the Middle Path in life means not being lazy at work, nor excessively seeking pleasure, finding one's balance to go further.
Regina Lee was inspired by the dialogue between the Buddha and Sronakotivimsa, relating it to her exam preparation. Being too relaxed or over-prepared can lead to unsatisfactory results. Maintaining the right focus and preparation achieves the best outcomes, like a perfectly tuned string playing beautiful music.
Justin Zhong shared his understanding that the Middle Path is the way of cultivation. It teaches us the importance of balance and the need to avoid extremes in any direction. Catherine Wei reflected that she learned nothing is permanent, so one shouldn't take things too seriously and should try to find equilibrium within oneself.
The youth members expressed that reading Venerable Master's articles established the right views and understanding. They are looking forward to the next reading session to share insights and gain wisdom.
