2023 UoA FGC Welcoming Day
On 11th of March 2023, Fo Guang Club of the University of Auckland held its Welcoming Day for new members of the Semester. A total of 23 youths with diverse backgrounds, including Canada, Malaysia, China, Taiwan, Indonesia and many more, gathered at FGS Auckland for this exciting event.
Activities such as ice-breaking games, temple tours, wishing bell hitting, walking and sitting meditation all came into place collectively under the guidance and harmonious teamwork of YAD members. "It was a great opportunity to meet like-minded people, and it was peaceful to sit in the present moment and hear all the sounds arising around the Temple during meditation," shared Nadine. President of Fo Guang Club, SinJun Chong, then went on and introduced members to Prince Siddhartha and Venerable Master Hsing Yun's One Stroke Calligraphy exhibitions, guiding them through a video of Humanistic Buddhism while explaining the Venerable Master's undertakings on propagating Dharma to benefit all sentient beings. With heartfelt gratitude, they offered light to the Venerable Master. They carried on with the introductions of FGS Auckland and Christchurch' dedications and selfless contributions to the community while upholding the Three Goodness and Four Givings constantly in mind.
FGS NZ Abbess Manshin, encouraged new members to introduce themselves in fun yet interactive ways; incorporating the vast range of specialties, interests and diverse cultural backgrounds, many questions were raised and answered. This shows the Temple's humanistic approach, as it serves multiple functions while still catering to the spiritual needs of everyone. "Abbess' words gave me hope, and I'm grateful to have her support and encouragement to keep believing in myself," added Ben. With a willing heart to offer, it gives convenience to others. It is the key to discovering inner potential but also a platform where the wisdom of Buddha can be learnt and put into practice. Only with self-affirmation can one make improvements; only when mutual respect is achieved can one have good affinities; only when we walk our paths without being self-centered can we cultivate good character.
Upon departing, participants expressed their deepest appreciation for Venerables and YAD committee members who approached each one of them genuinely. They shared that it was an exciting yet fulfilling day where doubts were resolved, and wisdom gained, while they look forward to more exciting events in the future! “It was great to see our new members and catch up with the existing members and youths on Welcoming Day. I am grateful for the guidance from Abbess and Venerables, as well as the support from the committee and members. It is a great feeling to be part of the team, as one person can walk fast, but a group of people can walk far,” concluded SinJun.
